Research Proves Drinking Water Really DOES Help You Lose Weight
Good news for people looking for an easy way to shed a few pounds! Sure, you’ve probably heard this all before. And when it comes to weight loss secrets, it’s perfectly normal to roll your eyes and turn up your scam radar. But listen to this.
Age-Old Dieting Advice Finally Gets Some Respect
A little dieting secret once considered a myth is now backed by science. Drink water and you'll lose weight. Apparently, a new scientific study has found this isn’t a fable but a fact.
In a controlled study dieters were given two cups of water to drink before each meal. After careful follow-up the verdict was in. This group lost five (5) pounds more than a control group of dieters who do not drink more water than usual. And a year later, they had kept more of the weight off as well.
Study Specifics
The study was conducted on middle-aged and older adults, but it's possible that younger dieters can benefit as well. The reason why water boosts weight loss may be twofold:
Research suggests that drinking more water actually sparks your metabolism so that you burn more calories. On the other hand, it could simply be that filling up with water before meals makes you less likely to eat too much or choose high calorie drinks.
Whatever the reason, there is now documented science behind the “water folklore.” In the study, more than 40 obese adults between the ages 55 and 75 were given instructions to eat healthy meals of about 1200 to 1500 calories each day. Half of the group was told to drink a 16 ounce bottle of water before each meal. The remaining dieters were given water but they didn't receive drinking instructions. Three months later the first group had dropped an average of 15.5 pounds. The other group had lost an average of 11 pounds.
The 44% increase in weight loss was attributed to drinking water.
There's no doubt that water is the healthiest beverage out there. When you consider that the average American drinks about 230 calories a day in addition to the calories they get from their meals, switching to calorie free water alone is the obvious choice. If you have to have something more to satisfy your taste buds, unsweetened tea and coffee in moderation or low-fat milk is a better choice than sugar-laden sodas and juices.
But when you think about it, when it comes to flushing away unwanted pounds what could be easier? Just drink two (2) cups of water before your meals and your dieting strategies will receive a much needed boost before the first morsel of food ever reaches your lips.
