The Powers of Green Tea and Diabetes

Can green tea actually prevent diabetes?  Studies show, this could be the case.  Read on to find out more on the powers of green tea for diabetes.

Green tea has been known to be a miracle drink.  Many different studies have been done that have shown that green tea has antioxidant properties that help protect the body from many different health issues.  One of these happens to be diabetes.  In fact, new studies are showing that green tea can possibly even prevent type-1 diabetes.

What is type-1 diabetes?

Type-1 diabetes is the most common diabetes.  It happens when the pancreas stops producing insulin altogether.  Type-2 diabetes is when insulin is not produced correctly in the body.  There is no cure for type-1 diabetes and patients have to learn how to monitor their sugar intake, insulin injections and make sure they have a healthy exercise routine.

According to Health News, researchers at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta tested the effects of a specific compound in green tea to see what its antioxidant qualities were.  Mice were infected with type-1 diabetes.  At 16 weeks, it was discovered that only 25 percent of the mice that were given the EGCG from green tea developed diabetes.  This is compared to 67 percent who developed diabetes when they were only given water.  At 22 weeks, the group with the EGCG green tea increased to 45 percent.  However, this is compared to 78 percent with the plain water group.
