When it comes to these little insects, you'll want to get rid of them FAST. Doctors will be quick to prescribe pricey and potent shampoos, but if you want a solution that's low on chemicals (and cost) just reach for the lemons.

There are two options with this: mix lemon juice with a paste and apply to the scalp before bed (I would suggest wrapping the hair in a towel or seran wrap). In the morning, wash and shampoo as normal. Repeat every night for five days or until the lice is gone.

The other option is to go through the same process with a mixture of a few tbs of lemon juice with a few tbs of vinegar and one egg.

The lemon is also said to prevent dandriff. Bonus!

Lice pretty much evokes one response in people: EWWWWWW! So try this method to get rid of those little critters: massage coconut oil into your scalp after you've shampooed your hair (just enough so it's not too oily).

Water will not drown lice, but the extreme heat of water in the washer will kills them. Combs, brushes, and hair accessories should either be replaced or soaked in very hot water for at least 5 minutes. If there are clothing or other items that cannot be washed, they should be placed in plastic bags for a minimum of 3 days. This amount of time will kill lice and newly hatched eggs as they will be lacking nutrition to stay alive.

Mayonnaise can be used to remove nits. In theory, the oil in mayonnaise will make the nits slip off the hair shaft and will suffocate the lice.

Similar to mayonnaise, using Vaseline is meant to suffocate and slide lice and their eggs form the hair and scalp.

The LiceMeister Comb is a way of manually removing lice and nits. This comb also comes with a card to help identify nits and lice.

These nasty little critters give me anxiety at the start of every school-year! Worrying that my kids will come home with an infestation drive me nuts - so my number 1 thing is PREVENTION. I add 6-12 drops of pure Tea Tree Oil to our shampoo and conditioner (all year round) - this supposedly keeps them at bay. Knock on wood we haven't had an outbreak in our household yet....! :)

But I found a natural treatment for head lice at one of my favorite websites if ever we have one - we will be prepared to combat those annoying little critters! Check it out: http://snipurl.com/gdsyz

I passed this remedy process along to a neighbor of mine who had the unfortunate honor of having to treat her kids....she said it worked like a charm, is a bit time consuming, but worth it as opposed to using all those chemicals they try to sell you! And now they use Tea Tree oil in their shampoo/conditioners and haven't had a problem since! Good Luck!
