Ozempic (semaglutide) is a medication used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes and obesity. While it is generally well-tolerated, like all medications, it can cause side effects. Some of the potential side effects of Ozempic are listed below:

  1. Inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis): Ozempic can cause inflammation of the pancreas, which can be serious. Signs and symptoms of pancreatitis include severe pain in the abdomen that does not go away, with or without vomiting. The pain may be felt from the abdomen to the back.
  2. Changes in vision: In rare cases, Ozempic can cause changes in vision. These changes may include blurry vision or difficulty focusing.
  3. Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia): Ozempic can cause low blood sugar, especially when used in combination with other medications that also lower blood sugar, such as insulin or sulfonylureas. Signs and symptoms of low blood sugar include dizziness, lightheadedness, blurred vision, anxiety, irritability or mood changes, sweating, slurred speech, hunger, confusion or drowsiness, shakiness, weakness, headache, fast heartbeat, and feeling jittery.
  4. Kidney problems (kidney failure): Ozempic can cause kidney problems, especially in people who already have kidney problems. Symptoms of kidney problems may include diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting, which can lead to dehydration and worsen kidney function. It is important to drink fluids to reduce the chance of dehydration.
  5. Serious allergic reactions: Ozempic can cause serious allergic reactions, although this is rare. Symptoms of an allergic reaction may include swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat; difficulty breathing or swallowing; severe rash or itching; fainting or feeling dizzy; or rapid heartbeat.
  6. Gallbladder problems: Ozempic can cause gallbladder problems, although this is rare. Symptoms of gallbladder problems may include pain in the upper abdomen, fever, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or clay-colored stools.
  7. Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and constipation: These are the most common side effects of Ozempic. In most cases, these side effects are mild and go away on their own. Drinking plenty of fluids and eating smaller, more frequent meals can help reduce these symptoms.

It is important to note that not everyone who takes Ozempic will experience these side effects, and some people may experience side effects that are not listed here. If you are taking Ozempic and experience any side effects, it is important to speak with your healthcare provider. They can help determine whether the side effect is serious and advise you on the best course of action.
